With prisoner headcount down 17 jails closed in Tgana

first_imgHyderabad: Seventeen out of the 49 jails in Telangana have been shut down temporarily following reduction in number of prisoners getting lodged in the jails and the state prisons department intends to use the closed prisons for social welfare centres.According to the department, the 17 jails were closed down over the past five years due to insufficient prisoners which, it is said, is the result of the reformation and rehabilitation measures undertaken by them and motivating the prisoners to act as partners in the elimination of crime from society. The number of prisoners has come down from about 7,000 to about 5,000, the department said. The department, which has been striving to reduce crime, had launched different social service initiatives, and also started the concept of ‘Aftercare Services’ to facilitate and help the ex-prisoners lead normal life and not fall back upon crime. The closed prisons can be used for social welfare centres or special homes for beggars, destitute, orphans, etc. at least temporarily, said director general of prisons and correctional services Vinoy Kumar Singh said. The department, which intends to run 100 petrol bunks, currently operates 18 petrol pumps in Hyderabad city and different districts wherein some released prisoners and inmates (convicts undergoing sentences) besides former jail authorities man such bunks. The prisons department has prepared a list of 1,000 habitual offenders in the state, we will be able to cut down the crime graph in the state by engaging almost all the habitual criminals, the top jail official said adding some of them are already self-employed or employed in one of the prison industries or placed somewhere in job melas organised by it. Mourinho reveals Bailly Smalling played with injuries

first_imgManchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that the team’s defensive duo of Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling both played with injuries against Arsenal.Mourinho lamented the pair were tired towards the end of the encounter. The former Chelsea boss was asked whether he felt under attack as Arsenal mounted pressure but rejected that theory.“No. Not under siege, not at all,” Mourinho said, according to Manchester Evening News.Jose Mourinho is sold on Lampard succeeding at Chelsea Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho wanted to give his two cents on Frank Lampard’s odds as the new Chelsea FC manager, he thinks he will succeed. There really…“I feel that is a moment where, for example, we played against the team that is at the top of their season, in the top of their moment where everything goes well for them, I think that’s clearly a team in a high against a team that has so many problems, and the top of these problems, during football matches we shoot outselves.”“Today we had a very, very good start, I think everybody was expecting a good start, 1-0 for us. We score [David de Gea’s error for Shkodran Mustafi’s opener], 1-0 for them. In the second-half, in the best moment of our team, where Arsenal was clearly trying to stop the game, get one injury here, get one injury there, they were trying to control the game and to reduce the intensity of the game, we score the second goal for them and then is again 2-1. So difficult.”“But the reality is in the last four matches we didn’t lose, bad results, yes, apart from Young Boys, the three draws were three bad results. But we did not lose. And before that we lost against Manchester City, everybody loses, not just us. And then before that we had a period where we were playing in our limits which is sometimes people don’t understand, where we play in our limits.”last_img read more

Berteau to Head up Professional Services Council

first_imgDavid Berteau will leave his post as assistant secretary of defense for logistics and materiel readiness to become chief executive officer of the Professional Services Council (PSC), the trade group that represents nearly 400 federal services contractors announced this week.Berteau, a frequent speaker at ADC events before he was confirmed to his current DOD post in December 2014, will assume his new role March 28. He replaces Stan Soloway, who led PSC for 15 years until stepping down last fall.“We couldn’t be more pleased to have as our new CEO someone with such a deep background in government services,” said PSC Chairman Ellen Glover, according to a written statement. “David has worked at high levels in government, in the private sector and in academia, always focusing on the heart of what PSC does.”Berteau has worked in both government and industry. He served in the Pentagon in a variety of positions during the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1993, he served as the acting assistant secretary of defense for production and logistics, and from 1992 to 1993 he was the chairman for the Defense Conversion Commission. From 1993-2001, Berteau worked at SAIC, including four years as a senior vice president. He was a consultant and director at Clark & Weinstock from 2003 to 2008. Afterward he joined the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he became senior vice president and director of the National Security Program on Industry and Resources.Berteau told the Washington Business Journal that his time at PSC likely will focus on helping contractors and agencies find the best value in the face of tight fiscal constraints. “Those issues are permanent,” Berteau said.Of course, keeping PSC’s members happy will be an overriding mission.“The first foundational starting point is to understand the needs of the current members and provide a ways of meeting those needs so you retain the membership that you’ve got,” Berteau said. “There’s a lot of opportunity for growth because the federal government continues to expand what it needs from the commercial sector and from the private sector and as technology evolves.” Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

Apple doubles the suppliers committed to 100 clean energy

CEO Tim Cook in 2014 famously said he doesn’t “consider the bloody ROI” (return on investment) when it comes to issues like the environment, accessibility and worker safety. It has long been his and Apple’s goal to run entirely all of the company’s operations on renewable energy.Last year, it finally accomplished that goal, when it said all of its facilities around the world run on 100% clean power. In 2018, the company and its suppliers generated enough clean energy that it could have powered over 600,000 homes in the US.At the same time, Apple has been pushing to recycle parts from its devices and build new products using recycled products, with disassembly robots speeding up the process. In March, the company said that it hit a new environmental achievement. Last year, it announced the iPhone was manufactured with a zero waste certification, and this year it added the iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and HomePod to that program. While Apple has doubled the number of suppliers vowing to use renewable energy, it’s unclear how many supplier in total the company works with.Originally published April 11, 12:01 a.m. PT.Correction, 8:04 a.m.: The initial version of this story incorrectly stated the number of Apple’s suppliers. USbound British Muslim teacher ejected from plane

first_imgA British Muslim teacher travelling to New York last week as a member of a school party from South Wales was denied entry to the US, a media report said.Juhel Miah and a group of children and other teachers from Llangatwg Comprehensive in Aberdulais, Neath Port Talbot, South Wales, were about to take off from Iceland on February 16 on their way to the US when he was removed from the plane at Reykjavik, the Guardian reported. The previous week, on 10 February, a US appeals court had upheld a decision to suspend US president Donald Trump’s executive order that temporarily banned entry to the country from seven Muslim-majority countries.Miah, 25, from Swansea, said he was made to feel like a criminal and was so worried by what happened to him that he did not eat or sleep for two days.He told Wales Online on Monday that shortly before the flight was due to leave he was approached by an official who told him he could not board the plane.“Everyone was looking at me,” Miah said. “As I was getting my luggage the teachers and kids were confused. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I was being escorted out. It made me feel like a criminal. I couldn’t speak, I was lost for words.”“We got to the airport, and as soon as we got to check in, the lady behind the desk read my passport and then straight away said ‘you’ve been selected for a random security check’.”Miah added: “She took me to the room, made me stand on a stool, take my shoes off, jacket off, checked under my foot, got a swab to brush over my hand and bag, my clothing and school hoodie (sweatshirt). They gave me the all clear and then I went.”The school booked him on to a flight back to the UK, the Guardian said. The teacher’s employer, Neath Port Talbot council, has written to the US embassy in London demanding an explanation and the issue is being taken up by Welsh politicians.A council spokesman said Miah was left feeling belittled at what it described as “an unjustified act of discrimination”.last_img read more
