Stink bug damage in soybeans

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Matt Hutcheson, Seed Consultants, Inc.Stink bug damage is becoming a greater concern in Eastern Corn Belt soybean fields, especially with the presence of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), a species that has moved into our sales footprint in recent years. While other stink bugs cause damage, the BMSB is of special concern because it is an invasive species from Asia that was introduced into the United States within the last 20 years.First discovered in Pennsylvania in 2001, the BMSB has continued to move west. Over the last few years, university experts and company agronomists have heard more reports of stink bug damage to soybeans. Growers scouting their soybean fields around harvest time may have seen some pods that were shriveled and/or soybean seed that was very small or appeared to be missing. This damage may have been a result of stink bug feeding. Stink bugs prefer to feed on reproductive tissues, they have piercing mouthparts that allow them to feed on soybean seed in the pods of plants. As the presence of the BMSB grows, this damage may become more common in parts of the Eastern Corn Belt. For more information on the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug check out these Ohio State resources.last_img read more

This shows how much the level of competition is increasing.”We’re a great team but all our rivals are very strong as well, it shows that if we want to be champions we have to do something extra. “It’s not enough beating the record, sometimes we have to do even more.”We’ve focused upon this at the start of the season and started really well. In death Leonard Cohens voice popping up in hit TV shows violent

first_imgMONTREAL – When it comes to getting permission to use Leonard Cohen’s music, Ubisoft’s bloody Assassin’s Creed trailer gets an enthusiastic green light, while ads, pornography and even the Montreal Symphony Orchestra don’t fare as well.Since his death in 2016, the late Canadian singer’s gravelly baritone has been popping up everywhere from highbrow Montreal art exhibits to the end credits of the hit American TV shows “Billions” and “The Americans.”None raised more eyebrows than Ubisoft, which chose to feature the title track to Cohen’s final album, “You Want it Darker,” on the trailer for its latest version of its violent game franchise, whose target audience was born decades after the singer wrote many of his greatest hits. While the process of obtaining song rights is a lengthy and complex legal process, the final approval falls to Robert Kory, Cohen’s longtime manager and the trustee of the late singer’s estate. The Los Angeles-based lawyer says he considers a variety of factors in making what he calls an “esthetic determination,” including whether the proposed arrangement suits the spirit of the song and whether it will expand the singer’s audience.“My role is to have more people encounter Leonard Cohen, because if they encounter Leonard Cohen they’re going to find to something deeper and ultimately something that will uplift them,” he said in a phone interview.Kory said he was impressed by Ubisoft’s “respectful” approach to Cohen’s music and the company’s willingness to collaborate when developing an arrangement. He also felt the trailer’s structure and violent narrative fit with the song’s dark themes.“You have the character in Assassin’s Creed faced with overwhelming darkness, which is what the song is warning us,” he said.“It’s a warning to the world: ‘I didn’t know I had permission to murder and to maim,’” he said, quoting one of the song’s lyrics.Kory said working with Ubisoft also gave the estate the opportunity to present Cohen’s music to a younger audience.“We’re going to introduce this song to a lot of teenage boys whose parents may have been listening to Leonard Cohen,” he said.“But maybe they hear the song and they’re moved by it and say, ‘wow, Leonard Cohen. Maybe I should listen to something else.’”Kory has less praise for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s 2017 arrangement of “You Want It Darker,” which he criticizes as too uplifting. While the orchestra was given permission to perform the song, Kory says the use of harp music was inappropriate for a song which refers to the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac. As a result, he denied the MSO full “synchronization rights” to produce and sell the arrangement.“The Lord is telling Abraham: ‘Kill your son,’ and you have harp music, angelic music. Would you approve that?” he asked.Since the singer’s death at the age of 82, his estate has received daily requests for rights of use, Kory says. The rate of approval depends on the type of use requested and the complicated back-and-forth with copyright holders.Permission to perform a straightforward cover is easy enough to get, he said, while arrangements that change the music or make use of Cohen’s vocal performance are more complicated.Pornographic films, political pieces that don’t reflect Cohen’s beliefs and most major advertisers are shot down.On the other hand, movie and TV proposals tend to be accepted because they are generally presented by people who understand the music, he said. While he sees himself as a protector of Cohen’s musical legacy, Kory says he also tries to be open and to avoid reductionism, “or anyone thinking Leonard Cohen’s work is susceptible to one interpretation and that is the correct interpretation.”Price is a factor too, although Kory insists it’s a secondary one.“We won’t do something that’s wrong for any amounts of money,” he said. While Kory sometimes brings in the singer’s son, Adam Cohen, to consult on musical issues, he says he’s developed the confidence to make decisions based on the faith Leonard Cohen always placed in him.“Leonard kept telling me in the face of my doubts, ‘trust your instincts, Robert. You have a great esthetic appreciation of what I do,’” he said.last_img read more

Including this season, Votto has led the position in WAR four times, but he’s only been named a starter twice. (Meanwhile, today’s less extreme version of Ripken is catcher Salvador Perez, a four-time starter but a two-time WAR leader.) It is a bit harder to find players with huge gaps between reputation and performance these days, though, and you might think that’s due to the rise of sabermetrics in recent seasons. But if so, it’s not showing up in the overlap between voting results and our by-the-numbers picks. If anything, All-Star lineups don’t align with the stats any better now than they did decades ago. This season, 53 percent of the actual starters would also be starters if we picked the rosters by WAR; the long-term average (since 1975) is 50 percent. The percentage of common players between the two lineups has fluctuated around that mark for as far back as our data goes:That doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll see somebody challenge Ripken’s (or Hernandez’s) records for misplaced All-Star voting anytime soon. But with the voters still foregoing the cold logic of statistics in favor of sentiment, it does mean there’s still a chance for it to happen, for better and for worse.Check out our latest MLB predictions. Ripken isn’t the only one, though. Some of the players received an overly generous haul of All-Star nods due to the scarcity of big names at their position. Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez was an automatic pick for many All-Star voters for more than a decade, seldom having much competing star power to draw eyes away from his checkbox on the ballot (with all due respect to Jason Varitek and Jorge Posada). As a 35-year-old in 2007, Pudge — who was very much on the decline by that point — was still a more enticing pick for fans than Ramon Hernandez, Kenji Johjima and Gerald Laird, for obvious reasons.Meanwhile, the anti-Ripken is longtime Cardinals and Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez, who only started a single All-Star Game (1986) despite leading National League first basemen in WAR eight times. Four of those seasons, the slick-fielding Hernandez was thwarted by Steve Garvey, who — not coincidentally — is tied for third on the “over-selected” list above. He also lost out to Jack Clark, Al Oliver and even Pete Rose, who moved to first base (and was one of the league’s worst fielders there) late in his career. Don’t get me wrong: He’s an inner-circle Hall of Famer and one of the greatest shortstops to ever play the game. But he also racked up some really generous All-Star starting bids over the years, taking the honor away from seven different players. (In 2001, he was voted in as a third baseman over Troy Glaus, who was having a far superior season at the position, and later traded starting positions with shortstop Alex Rodriguez. I only counted A-Rod’s displacement in this list.) But it’s also a salute to fan favorites and other sentimental picks, even if the stats say they haven’t played up to snuff. This is to be expected, because the fans vote to determine the starting position players; the casual fan is less likely to be scrutinizing the BABIP of every National League shortstop than he or she is to just pick the person with the familiar name.So for every no-brainer All-Star like Barry Bonds in the early 2000s (or Mike Trout in more recent seasons), there have been starters like Cal Ripken Jr. in 2001 — a year he finished below the replacement level1Never mind that he homered on a grooved pitch from Chan Ho Park in the game. — or Reggie Jackson (who’d hit .216 since the 1983 All-Star break) in 1984.But what would the All-Star Game look like if the stat geeks had full control over who played? Which players have consistently been voted into the All-Star Game despite weak stats? Are the rosters at least getting better over time?To judge who deserved to start the All-Star Game in a given year, I began with wins above replacement (WAR) data from FanGraphs.2I usually blend FanGraphs’ version of WAR with that of Baseball-Reference.com, but only FanGraphs calculates monthly WAR splits. Since there’s something of a debate over whether the selection process should only consider first-half stats or a longer timeframe, I compromised by giving a player credit for both his first-half WAR from the season in question3Defined as his WAR for the months of April through June. as well as his second-half WAR from the previous season, with the former getting double weight. (That way, more than half of a season is always considered, but emphasis is given to more recent performance.) I split this figure by position according to how many games the player spent at each spot on the diamond and ranked the players within each position for each league in each season.(For the purposes of this exercise, I only looked at position players, since starting pitchers are selected by the managers and their eligibility is governed by a rule about how recently they pitched before the All-Star Game.)Although Ripken was named an All-Star starter 17 times in his 21-year MLB career, he was only the best player at his position by WAR nine times — an eight-game difference that ranks as the biggest discrepancy for any All-Star since 1975.4FanGraphs’ monthly WAR splits go back to 1974, but as noted above, I used the previous year’s second-half stats in my ranking. Everyone would like to play in Valencia,” said the 29-year-old.Valencia’s transfer plans have not gone as well as they hoped, but Parejo is remaining optimistic over their prospects.“Little by little, reinforcements arrive,” he noted.“All clubs want to improve and sign better footballers.“Last year we had an excellent group, not only on the pitch, but also off it. Rummenigge explains why James will stay at Bayern

first_imgNow that the winter transfer deadline is closed, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge explained his reasoning behind James Rodriguez staying at Bayern.During the whole winter transfer window there were rumors that suggested James Rodriguez would certainly leave Bayern Munich, but chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge explained why the Bavarian club ultimately decided to keep the Colombian midfielder in the club.Throughout the season there have been several rumors of a disagreement between the player and manager Niko Kovac, who left him on the bench several times in all competitions and never really explained why. These actions were obviously regarded as a message for the player, the media believed that the Croatian boss didn’t want James on the squad and we all expected him to leave before January 31.But turns out we were all wrong, as neither the club nor the manager wanted James Rodriguez out of Bayern Munich and they all unanimously decided that the best option was for him to stay until the end of the season at least. But going a little bit further in this decision, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge explained that he never even entertained the idea of the Colombian player leaving the German club.🗣️ Rummenigge sobre @jamesdrodriguez: “Creo que todos queremos verle regularmente sobre el terreno de juego, pero eso depende del entrenador. Tengo que decir honestamente que realmente me gusta James”. pic.twitter.com/LagN2ffqCB— James Rodríguez Col (@jamesdrodrifans) January 31, 2019In fact, Rummenigge considers himself one of James’ biggest fans and he truly believes that the player has everything to become the club’s best player.During a football and business congress celebrated in the city of Dusseldorf, the Bayern Munich chairman was questioned about the club’s final decision to not let James Rodriguez leave despite the several offers from clubs like Juventus, Chelsea FC, Manchester United, and even Real Madrid.Rummenigge didn’t even flinch when he responded that the player will stay and the club simply doesn’t care about letting him leave, he also said one of the biggest truths in today’s football about James Rodriguez’s left foot.“James Rodriguez will remain as a Bayern Munich player, this is the best decision for both him and the club,” said the chairman via ESPN.“I have to recognize that I am one of his biggest fans. He is a great player and he may have the best left foot in the Bundesliga.”Jadon Sancho, Borussia DortmundCrouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United.“I really believe that we all wish to see James more often on the pitch, but that decision is for the manager to make. But I do have to be honest when I say that I love that player.”‘James tiene la mejor zurda de toda la Bundesliga’: RummeniggeEl dirigente del Bayern Múnich se declaró fan del colombiano y espera que juegue máshttps://t.co/5zmKIMiyFQ pic.twitter.com/U6j75jn0Vp— Futbolred.com (@futbolred) January 31, 2019After this statement, the media was eager to know what manager Niko Kovac would have to say about his chairman’s beliefs on James, this was a clear message directly from the board of directors and the Croatian boss needed to respond.Far from avoiding the topic as he was pressed about it earlier on Thursday, Kovac made a massive revelation about James Rodriguez’s discipline on the training grounds.“The thing with James Rodriguez is that my decision to not play hi is solely based on what I see on the pitch during practice.”“James is a truly great guy but only the players who practice better are the ones who play. We will play a game in the middle of next week, this will give every single player an opportunity to play and this obviously includes James Rodriguez.”Now that James has heard about the manager’s thoughts on his training efforts, this might be taken as a message that could motivate him to improve during practice and finally earn his spot on the starting eleven on a weekly basis.Rummenigge, sobre el futuro de James: “Lo digo abierta y honestamente, me gusta mucho, soy su fan, pero aún hay tiempo y tenemos que tomar la mejor decisión para él y para nosotros” pic.twitter.com/33lo68XuIB— Bayern Latino (@BayernLat) January 31, 2019What do you think about Bayern Munich’s decision to let James remain at the club until the end of the season? Authorities seek public information about man found dead off Mission Beach coast

first_img Posted: October 18, 2018 Updated: 6:04 PM SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for information about an Egyptian man who was found dead under potentially suspicious circumstances in the ocean off the coast of Mission Beach. The body of 37-year-old Haitham “Max” Elshayeb was floating about 2 1/2 miles from shore when a fisherman on a boat spotted it shortly before 10:30 a.m. Oct. 10, according to San Diego police. The body, clad only in surfer-style shorts, bore no obvious signs of traumatic injuries, Lt. Anthony Dupree said. A possibly suspicious circumstance, however, was a chain wrapped around the dead man’s waist, though it might have been used simply as a belt or style accessory, the lieutenant said.Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the fatality “out of an abundance of caution,” and the fatality has been classified as a suspicious death, Dupree said. A ruling on the cause of Elshayeb’s death remained on hold this week pending completion of postmortem exams.Police hope to contact people who had contact with Elshayeb in the days and weeks leading to his death, Dupree said.Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
