Bermuda’s Jessica Lewis Wins 400 Gold at Parapan American Games

first_imgLIMA, Peru, CMC – Bermudian wheelchair sprinter Jessica Lewis made a scintillating start to the Parapan American Games on Saturday, storming to victory in the women’s T53 400 metres final ahead of two Americans to win gold.Lewis executed the perfect race, making a flying start and finishing in a time of one minute, 05.95 seconds, a second faster than Yen Hoang, of the United States, who came second in 1:02.95. Kelsey Le Favour, of the US, placed third in 1:02.97.Lewis is eyeing a sweep of medals in all three of her events in Lima and will return to action in the 800 final on Monday.“It’s such an honour to bring home a gold medal again to Bermuda,” said Lewis, the reigning Parapan Am T53 100 champion.“I felt like I had a great chance of winning the race, but I knew that it was going to be a fight with the US girls. I am quite thrilled that I managed to be that far ahead of them.”The gold medal represents a major breakthrough for Lewis, as she has often struggled for sustained power at the longer distances and believes her switch to a harder pair of gloves has made a huge difference.“I have transitioned into using the hard gloves which have definitely helped me get stronger in the longer-distance events,” she added.“I had the best start I have ever had in these gloves, so everything just came together for the race.”Lewis’ main race, the 100, will take place on Wednesday, with the 26-year-old hoping to shatter her Parapan Am record time of 17.67, which she set in Toronto in 2015.last_img read more

Open Thread: There’s No Such Thing As Free Content

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Open Thread#web So why do users keep expecting to consume it, reuse it, share it and store it without paying for it?Let me explain: Someone, somewhere ends up putting out money for everything you do online, every piece of news you read, every Web app you use. It takes professionals and hardware across a gigantic industry to make these things work. In terms of overhead alone, content costs a lot. So why do some users always kick and scream at the first suggestion of paid content? Do you think content is worth paying for, and if so, what are you personally willing to pay? This trend has been a common one in our virtual newsroom lately. Whether we’re praising the latest startup that’s had the sense to launch with a freemium model or wondering how old-media models (see News Corp. and the New York Times) are dealing with new media revenue possibilities, the subject of who pays for content and how is a hot one.As a journalist who came of age career-wise during the print era, and as a musician who first recorded songs on these things called “tapes,” I understand the cultural value of great content, and I admire the men and women who make it. I also love being able to support the creators and publications that bring me the content I love.On the other hand, as a typical NMD and one who lives almost entirely online, I have done my share of content scalping, whether it’s lifting a copyrighted photo for a design project, illegally downloading a single or two from a multiplatinum artist, or diving deep into the world of torrents where all the films are gloriously free and inconveniently subtitled in Hungarian. Like any petty thief, I tried to justify my actions to myself by saying that I’m only taking from those who can afford it. But let us speak frankly: The creative and publishing industries are all at a crisis point because of hundreds of millions of people like me who say the exact same thing. I’ve lately started to come to grips with my hypocrisy and started paying for content, whether that’s a legitimate iTunes purchase or a Netflix subscription. I tell you, it feels like I’m giving money to a feed-the-children charity when I’m really just paying for something that should have never been free in the first place.Today, YouTube has announced its plan to help indie filmmakers (and increase its own revenues) by asking users for a $5 fee to watch a selection of Sundance Film Festival movies. I’m wondering how many users will balk at the fee, and what will go through their heads when they do so.Will they be thinking about the months or years each filmmaker spent creating the movie? Or the time the actors spent preparing for and performing their roles? Will they think about filming equipment rentals? Will they consider the cost of hosting online videos at a scale that accommodates huge volumes of traffic around the globe and around the clock? Will they think about the developers who work tirelessly to make the magic of online video possible?Or will they simply knee-jerk and proclaim a loud “How dare they!” at the thought of paid content?(As a side note, I’m also curious to see a Venn diagram showing the overlap of people who object to paying for online content while vigorously complaining about “distracting” online advertising.)So, what’s the difference between the analog days, when creators charged for their creations and theft was theft, and these digital times, when anything that’s been transformed into ones and zeroes is fair game for free consumption, piracy, remixing and redistribution?I’m curious: What kinds of online content, if any, are you willing to pay for? And how much will you pay for them?Would you pay for news? Special, in-depth reports? Entertainment and multimedia? How about a blog subscription? Kirby Smart Responds To Jim Harbaugh’s “Barking Up The Wrong Tree” Tweet

first_imgA closeup of Kirby Smart in Georgia Bulldogs apparel.AUBURN, AL – NOVEMBER 11: Head coach Kirby Smart of the Georgia Bulldogs walks the field prior to facing the Auburn Tigers at Jordan Hare Stadium on November 11, 2017 in Auburn, Alabama. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) kirby smart georgiaTwitter/@KirbySmartUGAAt this rate, Jim Harbaugh’s ongoing war of words with half of the college football world may last until next season. It looks like he’ll have to find another new sparring partner, however. Georgia’s Kirby Smart was critical of Michigan’s upcoming trip to IMG Academy, saying that he believes the NCAA will have to step in to stop it. That earned him a tweet from Harbaugh, who said that he was “barking up the wrong tree” with any assertion that Michigan is trying to break NCAA rules. And that is enough for Smart. When asked about Harbaugh’s response, he chose not to feed things any more. From Macon.com:“No reaction,” Smart said following an hour-long speech he gave at the Minority Coaches Association of Georgia’s football coaches conference. “To be honest with you, I’m focused on what we can do at the University of Georgia to get better. That’s the most important thing to me, getting better there.”That’s no fun, Kirby. Luckily, odds are Harbaugh will find someone else to get into it with soon enough. He’s very good at that.[Macon.com]last_img read more

With prisoner headcount down 17 jails closed in Tgana

first_imgHyderabad: Seventeen out of the 49 jails in Telangana have been shut down temporarily following reduction in number of prisoners getting lodged in the jails and the state prisons department intends to use the closed prisons for social welfare centres.According to the department, the 17 jails were closed down over the past five years due to insufficient prisoners which, it is said, is the result of the reformation and rehabilitation measures undertaken by them and motivating the prisoners to act as partners in the elimination of crime from society. The number of prisoners has come down from about 7,000 to about 5,000, the department said. The department, which has been striving to reduce crime, had launched different social service initiatives, and also started the concept of ‘Aftercare Services’ to facilitate and help the ex-prisoners lead normal life and not fall back upon crime. The closed prisons can be used for social welfare centres or special homes for beggars, destitute, orphans, etc. at least temporarily, said director general of prisons and correctional services Vinoy Kumar Singh said. The department, which intends to run 100 petrol bunks, currently operates 18 petrol pumps in Hyderabad city and different districts wherein some released prisoners and inmates (convicts undergoing sentences) besides former jail authorities man such bunks. The prisons department has prepared a list of 1,000 habitual offenders in the state, we will be able to cut down the crime graph in the state by engaging almost all the habitual criminals, the top jail official said adding some of them are already self-employed or employed in one of the prison industries or placed somewhere in job melas organised by it. The department has come up with an innovative idea and is thinking of entry into housing development activities and make housing plots for the middle class and lower middle class at cost-to-cost basis by hiring released prisoners. As Telangana government is providing houses under 2BHK scheme to poor people, the prisons Department would make available plots for middle-class and lower middle-class people in gated communities at very affordable prices, Singh said.last_img read more
