first_imgConstruction works ongoing at the Sheriff Street-Mandela Avenue roadThe Public infrastructure Ministry has advised commuters that the Cummings Bridge, located at the intersections of Sheriff Street and Durey Lane, and Dennis Street, will be closed to traffic from today to Sunday to facilitate construction works under the Sheriff Street-Mandela Avenue Road Enhancement Project.In a notice published in one of the daily newspapers, the Ministry assured that the bridge will be reopened to traffic on July 15 at 06:00h.In the interim, the Ministry has asked that motorists heading north of the Cummings Bridge use Garnett Street or Middleton Street or other appropriate alternative routes.Similarly, motorists heading south of the bridge are asked to use First Street, Campbellville or Stone Avenue or other appropriate alternative routes.On the other hand, heavy-duty vehicles including sand trucks, lowbed trucks and other long vehicles and emergency vehicles will use the eastern bypass of Cummings Bridge.Most importantly, the Ministry has asked pedestrians and other road users to exercise caution and observe all directional signs in the area for safety.There has been much dissatisfaction with the slothful pace of the Sherriff Street-Mandela Avenue Project which began since August 2018.The works are pegged at a value of US$31.03 million, and the contract, spearheaded by Sinohydro Corporation Limited, was awarded since November 2017.The two-year project, which will cover approximately seven kilometres of road, is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and involves the relocation of utilities; the installation of lane and shoulder improvements; placement of sidewalks and paved shoulders; traffic signals, traffic signs, streetlights, drainage; a pedestrian overhead walkway; culverts, bridges, and a roundabout.last_img read more
