Microsoft working on foldable Surface phone, may launch later this year

Even after years of struggling hard, looks like Microsoft hasn’t given up on the smartphone business, the company is aiming to start a fresh. Reports are, Microsoft is working on a foldable Surface phone to launch in the fourth quarter of this year, 2018.Information regarding the phone was scarce until a leaked email with some new APIs was found in Windows 10’s latest preview a few days ago. Separately, a couple of new 3D concepts of the alleged Surface foldable phone have also been leaked by a Twitter user. Not only that, Surface chief Panos Panay has hinted that Microsoft is working with LG Display for the new foldable Surface phone via a tweet.According to rumours, the foldable Microsoft Surface phone is codenamed “Andromeda”. The device is expected to come with a dual-display design and as per some internal documents obtained by The Verge, the Andromeda will just not be a “phone”, it will be more than that. It is going to be a “pocketable” device. Looks like, for the foldable phone, Microsoft is going in line with its successful Surface line of laptops. Meaning, the Andromeda foldable Surface Phone is expected to come with flexible hinges just as the recently launched Surface laptops.”It’s a new pocketable Surface device form factor that brings together innovative new hardware and software experiences to create a truly personal and versatile computing experience,” notes an internal document from Microsoft.advertisementRumours also say that the Microsoft Surface foldable phone may come with a stylus pen support just as the other Surface devices. Microsoft seems to have been experimenting with stylus input for Andromeda. The Surface foldable phone will be designed in a way so that the device can be folded over like a book and the pen used to capture inputs. Additionally, the hinges on the foldable phone will be placed in a way so that it can go all the way up to 360 degrees. Microsoft is basically aiming to enhance functionality when the phone is fully opened and closed.Separately, some renders of the Microsoft Surface foldable phone have been leaked by a Twitter user named David Breyer. Reports are, the foldable Surface phone will look a lot like these 3D concepts created by David. It is noteworthy that these pictures are just concepts, meaning the final design of the phone is subjected to change.The Surface foldable phone aka Andromeda may be powered by ARM processors, Microsoft, however, is yet to reveal whether it will use Intel or Qualcomm for the device. Rumours are, the phone may run on Windows 10 and powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 850.As already revealed, the Surface foldable phone is rumoured to sport a dual-display design. Looks like, for the display of the phone, Microsoft, just as Apple for its upcoming iPhones, is in talks with LG Display. Microsoft Surface chief Panos Panay very recently posted a photo on Twitter of him placed in a foldable photo frame which has been gifted to him by LG.
