Warburtons makes £13.5m loss as sales decline 3.5%

first_imgWarburtons, which reported £20.7m pre-tax profit a year ago, has made a £13.5m loss as a result of restructuring costs and falling bread sales. With the core wrapped bread market continuing to decline, the company saw sales fall 3.5% year on year to £506.4m in year ended 29 September 2018.Despite the launch of products including a wrapped bloomer and sourdough Toastie loaf over the period, NPD did not offset the decline in the Warburton’s established core ranges. In the previous 12-month period, when the company had reported a 0.3% drop in overall sales, revenue had largely been held up by growth in non-bread lines, which include crumpets, bagels and teacakes. The company reported it had found it “challenging” to fully recover core cost increases in the past year, and that profits had been hit by £19.6m in exceptional costs. These included £5.7m after Warburtons ended bread production in Stockton-on-Tees, although it still produces crumpets at the site. In addition, the business also made around £6m in charges against plant and equipment it no longer required.A further £6.8m loan to Giles Food Limited has been written off. The business, which had produced own-label products including garlic bread, was shut down by Warburtons in summer 2017.“The wrapped bakery market continues to be very challenging and this, coupled with increased costs and some exceptional items, impacted our results for the 2017/2018 financial year,” said Warburtons chairman Jonathan Warburton.”However, excluding the exceptional costs, the underlying business remains profitable. During the same period, we also invested significantly in our business to meet changing consumer trends and to ensure we are well placed for long term growth.”Recent activity by Warburtons has included the launch of a new bagel range that is being promoted with adverts starring Robert De Niro.last_img read more

Comedian Paula Poundstone Brings her Gag Bag to Sag Harbor

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York Perhaps the funniest woman in America today, Paula Poundstone, known for her quick wit and wry responses, right or wrong, on NPR’s popular news quiz show, “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” heard locally on WSHU-FM, is playing the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor next Saturday night. She’s an award-winning humorist, who’s even performed standup at the White House Correspondents dinner sharing jokes with President Barack Obama. Last year, she joined Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Rivers and other prominent comediennes in a feature-length Showtime documentary called “Why We Laugh Too: Women of Comedy.” She’s also starred in one-woman comedy specials on HBO and Bravo, and won an Emmy Award. As millions of public radio listeners can attest, Poundstone is a true show-stopper thanks to her unmatched improv skills. When she’s on a roll, nobody can keep up with her.“They allow me to say whatever I want on ‘Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me.’ The panelists are unscripted, so it’s perfect for me,” Poundstone says. “I feel like I’m a batter in a batting cage. I get lobbed topics. Sometimes I just watch them go by, but every now and then I get a piece of one. If the others didn’t cheat, it would be an almost perfect work experience.”It’s true that she doesn’t routinely win the news quiz, but as “Wait, Wait” host Peter Sagal would readily admit, she deserves credit for almost always making the funniest points. For her standup performances, she has a special ability to connect with audiences so intimately and live in the moment so spontaneously that no two shows she does are ever the same.“It’s not that I don’t repeat material. I do,” Poundstone says. “My shows, when they’re good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party. When you first get there, you talk about how badly you got lost and how hard it was to find parking. Then you tell a story about your kids or what you just saw on the news. You meet some new people and ask them about themselves. Then someone says, ‘Tell that story you used to tell,’ and then someone on the other side of the room spills a drink, and you mock them. No one ever applauds me when I leave a party, though. I think they high five.”Her material is rarely blue and it’s never mean. What’s not to like? The Bay Street Theatre is located at 1 Bay St., in Sag Harbor. Showtime is 8 p.m. on May 24. For more information, visit www.baystreet.org.last_img read more

In turn, Sportitalia also reported that Lille had already secured Burak Yilmaz as Osimhen’s replacement from Besiktas. Meanwhile, An intermediary agent in the Osimhen’s Napoli transfer has also confirmed that the deal has reached the final conclusion. Andrea D’Amico told Napoli’s official radio station that it was on the home stretch. “For now, there’s silence on negotiations until the white smoke,” D’Amico told Radio Kiss Kiss. “Something’s in the process of being finalised, but I can’t say any more than that.” The agent was then asked how many coaches Gennaro Gattuso ‘liked’ the Lille forward. “Very much, he likes all good players. The Giuntoli-Gattuso axis is making Napoli stronger and stronger. “The right step for the attacker is Napoli, not Liverpool.” FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail分享 Loading… center_img Imminent transfer of Nigeria and Lille striker, Victor Moses to Napoli has reached the final phase as Serie A club officials put finishing touches to the player’s paperwork. Information frittered in from Italy indicates that Napoli are expected to finalise the details of the Osimhen’s transfer on Monday, with Orestis Karnezis potentially part of the deal with Lille. According to Sportitalia, Napoli confirmed that they were at the final stage of the contract paperwork for the 21-year-old striker. Despite the reports in France of a deal worth €81m, in Italy, they have never budged from the €60m mark and that does seem more realistic for Napoli. Lille are likely to also accept a player as part of the deal and reports pointed at the third-choice goalkeeper, Orestis Karnezis. The salary seems to have been agreed at a five-year contract worth €3.5m per season plus another €0.5m in bonuses. It had been confirmed that Osimhen passed his medical last Saturday in Rome, and the whole world has been waiting to see the player unveil as soon as possible. Initially, Friday(today) was fixed for the official unveiling of the player but the paperwork process seems to be moving on snail speed. read also:‘With consistency, hard work Osimhen could surpass world best players’last_img read more
